In today’s global economy, companies and their operations are virtually inseparable from their supply chains [1, 2]. Due to the integrative nature of supply chains, they are often also referred to as value chains or value networks. The extension and outsourcing of activities are, of course, based on the recognition that different organisations specialise, leading to product differentiation and relative cost advantages. Their reintegration in the form of global supply chains creates real competitive advantages so that competitiveness is now a question of how best to organise supply chains [5,6,7,8].
Due to the increasing demand for goods, relative scarcity of resources and the desire to mitigate the effects of climate change, the introduction and diffusion of artificial intelligence tools is increasingly important. The goal of producing more with less is an important contribution to achieving environmental sustainability. The technical foundations of knowlEdge enable, for example, the production of zero-defect products with predictable quality. At the same time, planning processes can be optimised due to improved decision support. Both contribute to lower energy consumption and waste generation throughout the supply network. The more businesses adopt an AI/machine learning-based approach to logistics and supply chain management; the better global supply chains will function.
Addressing these challenges requires a multidisciplinary approach involving expertise in AI, supply chain management, data governance, and legal and ethical considerations. Overcoming these challenges will enable organizations to fully leverage the potential of generative AI in the supply chain and drive significant improvements in operational efficiency and decision-making.
